Charlie Womack: I've Got Brothers Out Here"
Last season Charlie Womack watched most of Hurricane's victory over Winfield from the bench, having not fully proven himself as a starter on the Redskin defense. However as the season went on Charlie was a major factor finishing 4th on the team with 65 tackles.
"This year was a whole lot more exciting," Womack stated recalling last Friday's victory over the Generals. "I was better prepared to start the season, and yeah I was more into this game."
When asked if he was surprised by Winfield's offensive game plan during the Redskins 31-15 victory, Charlie admitted as much, "I figured they would spread it out and have Huff pass it more. They tried to muscle us and it didnt work."
Womack was a large reason it didn't work. He finished with 12 tackles to share the team lead with Cameron Kimble. Like I had with Lucas (Cooper) last year, Kimble and I have great chemistry and we communicate really well."
Even more so than Lucas, Charlie cant help but miss playing with another graduated member from last year's Hurricane defense, his older brother Tyler. "It hit me right before the season started, that I would never be playing with my brother ever again, which was tough. Then I thought I've got brothers out here," Charlie reasoned pointing out onto the turf at Redskin Stadium. "(Noah) Craddock and the rest of the defensive backs and linebackers are like brothers to me."
The game that Charlie enjoyed playing in most last season was Spring Valley. "There was nothing but hitting the whole game, it was physical and it was the most fun." I'm looking forward to playing them this season at home on our turf."
As far as Friday's game against Paintsville, Womack like most of the Redskins and their fans know little about this opponent. "They are BIG," he offers, "but if we hit the gaps we should be able to stuff them, and get our offense on the field."
He figures the Skins secondary will once again be playing without Mason Giacomo. However he likes what he sees from Jesse Lester and Walker James. "They play hard and both are doing well, I'm fine with either out there until Giacomo returns."
As he looks forward to the rest of the season, Charlie would love to get All-State recognition, and wants to once again be among the top 5 tacklers on the team. But most of all he wants to lead the Redskins to a long playoff run.
Notes: Other defensive stats v Winfiled: Beside Womack and Kimble leading the way with 12 tackles, J.T. Cooper had 11, Steven Shine 10, and Walker James, Payton Lunsford, and Noah Craddock each finished with 9.
Shine was credited with the Redskins' only sack, and Lunsford led the way with 2 tackles for loss.
Friday's game at Paintsville (Ky) High School kicks off at 730pm.
Hurricane's JV topped Winfield 34-12 on Monday night.
