Hurricane wins defensive battle with Woodrow Wilson 14-6

September 22, 2018

There really is no such thing as an ugly win. All wins look and feel pretty special.

But as predicted in this space the Redskins seemed a bit flat and found themselves in a 0-0 tie heading into the 4th quarter.

The first half was a battle of the punters, which favored Hurricane thanks to the leg of Tim McCutchen.

However after 3 punts for each team, Beckley had the half's best scoring opportunity as they drove inside the Redskins' 5 yard line late in the 2nd quarter. The Flying Eagles had a 1st and goal when J.T. Cooper blitz into the Beckley backfield and his hit forced a fumble whivh Tyrone Washington recovered.

Beckley has another scoring chance but J.T. James broke up a potential touchdown pass and the teams went to halftime entwined in a 0-0 defensive battle.

Hurricane got the ball to start the 2nd half but Nathan Roy was sacked and lost a fumble, giving the Flying eagles excellent field position.

However the Redskins' defense led by Cooper who had 16 tackles and 3 TFLs, and Cameron Kimble who registered10 stops, would not budge  and the barrage of punts continued.

After another 3 and out for Hurricane, once again the defense was up to the task, and Kryzstof Kudlak's 2nd sack of the game forced yet another Beckley punt, and the teams went to the 4th quarter still scoreless.

Both team muffed punts but were able to recover, and the Redskins mounted their best drive of the night, as they got inside the Woodrow 30 yard line, and into potential McCutchen FG range.

However a penalty and a sack threatened to derail yet another drive. However when  Nathan Roy

(2-9-34) found J.T. Cooper for a 22 yard gain on 3rd and 16 for a critical 1st down.

After yet another flag on the Redskins, boy the McPherson led crew throws a ton of flags, Christian Hill (24-136) broke free for a 25 yard touchdown and Hurricane was finally on the board.

With a 7-0 lead in hand the defense did what it had been doing all night and forced another Woodrow Wilson punt. This time a poor snap sailed over their punter's head and Cooper drilled him once he picked up the loose ball and  fumbled it. Tyrone Washington was "Johnny on the spot" again, and this time his fumble recovery was good for a Hurricane TD and a 14-0 lead.

Perhaps with Hurricane's defense a bit tired and a little loose with a 2 touchdown lead, Beckley was able to mount a drive and scored on a 25 yard pass play with :43 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 14-6.

When Chase Hager recovered the ensuing onside kick, the Redskins had a hard fought if not pretty 14-6 victory.

Notes: Principal Richard "Dickey" Campbell in his last official act as Hurricane High School Principal led the team onto the field.

HHS alum and 2014 Captain Matthew Cooper spoke to the team prior to the game.
