Mistakes cost Hurricane in 24-16 Loss to George Washington.

Hurricane rushed for over 328 yards and held Grant Wells under 200 yards passing without a touchdown, so they defeated George Washington last night right?....Wrong!

Having a kickoff returned for a touchdown, fumbling inside GW's 5 yard line, losing possession on an ill fated lateral, and missing a PAT, all played key roles in the Redskins disheartening 24-16 loss to the Patriots.

GW took the opening kickoff and drove smartly deep inside Hurricane territory, before the Redskins defense stiffened and forced a 40 yard Hughes FG which gave GW a 3-0 lead.

Hurricane initial drive looked to be stopped, but a roughing the kicker penalty gave the Skins a 2nd life. On a 4th and 1 Christian Hill picked up the first down and Hurricane was in the red zone. Hill would cap the drive from 4 yards out, following blocks by a pair of Hurricane's Linebackers, J.T. Cooper and Cameron Kimble, into the end zone for a 7-3 Hurricane advantage. It would be the Redskins only lead and it would be short lived.

The first critical mistake by Hurricane occurred as Isabell would return the ensuing kick off all the way to the house and within seconds GW had grabbed the lead back 10-7.

Hurricane responded with another long drive highlighted by several long runs by Hill, who finished with 257 yard rushing on an incredible 41 attempts, and a 15 yard scamper by Nathan Roy. However Hurricane faced a 4th and 2 from the 5. Confusion followed and the 2nd critical Redskin mistake occurred as the snap, which may never should have happened, was fumbled and Hurricane drive resulted in no points.

On the following drive J.T. James caused a fumble that J.T. Cooper recovered giving Hurricane another chance to draw even. Unfortunately the Redskins went 3 and out, as did GW after a Cooper sack of Grant Wells on 3rd down. The teams headed to the halftime locker rooms with GW clinging to a 10-7 lead.

The 2nd half started with punts by both teams. Hurricane took over and after two first downs, one on a Roy (6-15-42) completion to Cooper, another on a Jordan William 15 yard run, at that point their 3rd critical mistake occurred. Roy's pass to a motioning R.J. Engel was ruled a lateral which GW jumped on to regain possession.

The quarter ended with Wells (16-25-172) connected to his favorite receiver Alex Mazelon for 39 yards to the Hurricane 5. Wells ran it in early in the 4th quarter to give GW a 17-7 lead.

The Redskins responded, as the offense mixed in a few passes among Hill's array of successful rushes, and had a first down at George Washington's 13 yard line. However the drive stalled and Tim McCutchen was called upon to make the contest a one possession game, which he did, nailing a 28 yard field goal to pull Hurricane to 17-10.

McCutchen saved Hurricanes faulty Kick-off coverage with a touchdown saving tackle, but GW was driving as they looked to put the game out of reach. However a jarring tackle by Charlie Womack on Aiden Johnson knocked the ball loose with J.T James making the recovery and giving Hurricane new life.

Runs of 25 and 30 yards by Hill gave Hurricane a 1st down on GW's 18 yard line. When Williams followed with a 14 yard run the Redskins had a 1st and goal inside the GW 5 yard line. Hill took it in 2 plays later and it appeared that the Redskin had come back to tie the game. However the unthinkable happened and Hurricane's 4th critical error occurred as the hold on the PAT was botched throwing McCutchen's timing off and he missed the PAT! GW still lead 17-16.

On the next GW possession it appeared that Cameron Kimble had an opportunity for a Pick 6 but was unable to make the interception. 2 play later Wells scrambled for a 64 yard touchdown and a 24-16 Patriot lead. However it was still a one possession game and Hurricane had a chance.

It appeared they may have some magic left when Nate Barham took a reverse 23 yards to midfield, however the Redskins could not convert on 4th and 5 and GW ran out the clock from there.

Notes: Cooper and Walker James led the Redskins with 10 tackles each, while Kimble registered 8 stops.
