Capital Tops Hurricane 34-16

Yes one huge play prior to halftime turned the game, but Capital came to town and proved too much for the Redskins.

Kerry Martin Jr., who torched the Skins with 6 TD passes last year, sort of lulled Hurricane to sleep Friday night. Martin was 10-14 for 137 yards passing and 2 tds, and kept the Redskins' guessing most of the game with masterful execution on the read option, adding 70 yards on 15 carries.

The game stared well enough for Hurricane. The Redskins took the opening kickoff and drove deep into Capital territory behind the tough running of Christian Hill (24-170), only to be stopped on a 4th down at the Cougar's 29 yard line.

Hurricane's defense seemed to be up for the challenge that Capital represented, as Steven Shine (7 tackles) and J.T. Cooper (team leading 15 tackles) both sacked Martin forcing a Cougar punt.

The Skins struck first shortly thereafter as Nathan Roy hit Bo Adkins who slipped a tackle and raced 76 yards for a Hurricane touchdown and a 7-0 lead. The TD was Bo's 2nd on the season.

Capital went on a long drive that ended with Kalai Clark, the biggest running back in the state, drive in for a 4 yard score to tie the game at 7 -7.

On the ensuing drive Hill had a 47 yard run that set up a 24 yard Tim McCutchen Field Goal giving Hurricane it's last lead of the night 10-7. After a long kickoff return, Martin found Knox for a 6 yard TD strike and the Cougars regained the lead 14-10.

Hurricane looked to get a huge break late in the half, as Bomani Brooks recovered a Martin fumble at Capital' s 19 yard line. However, the Redskins could not convert a 3rd and 1 from the 10 and sent out McCutchen, with thoughts of pulling within a point at halftime.

This set up the game changing moment! Pittman came off the edge to block the kick and Kerrion Martin returned the ball 88 yards for a touchdown, and a 20-10 Capital halftime advantage.

Although out gained 185-141 Capital had the lead and the momentum.

The Cougars would take full advantage as the 2nd half started. Another long Capital drive ended when Martin threw his 2nd TD pass of the night, this one to Pittman, giving Capital a commanding 27-10 lead.

After a 3 and out for the Redskins' offense, Capital was at it once again and drove to the Hurricane 3 yard line. However Martin's pass was knocked out of his receiver's hands by Cooper into the waiting arms of Shine for an interception and some life for the Redskins.

A 53 yard pass from Roy to Dakota Williams (3-64) brought the Hurricane fans to their feet, but Roy was sacked on 4th down and the Redskins hope for a comeback were basically vanished.

Clark bullied his way into the end zone to add to Capital's lead prior to a Curon Cordon 19 yard run that set up a Roy 2 yard TD run resulting in the 34-16 final margin.

NOTES: Capital only out gained Hurricane 345 to 312 on the night.

Hurricane suffered from scoring only 10 points in the 1st half although having 4 drives deep in Cougar territory.

Hurricane won the turnover battle 2-1

Although throwing his 13 TD pass on the season, Roy (8-14 152) did throw his first interception.

Cameron Kimble (10 tackles) and Bomani Brooks (5 tackles) each had a sack.

Both team are now 4-2 on the season.
