Womack helps Hurricane "limp" to a 24-13 victory.

Hurricane coach Jeremy Taylor made an interesting decision to start the season. He opted to play his quarterbacks Nathan Roy and Austin Womack in alternating series. Getting Womack in the game certainly paid off for Taylor and the Redskins.

Womack led Hurricane on 3 TD drives ending two of those series with TD passes.

After the Redskins stalled on their opening drive it took the defense 1 play to give the ball right back to the offense, as J.T. Cooper forced a fumble that Cameron Kimble recovered deep in General territory.

After some costly penalties pushed Hurricane into a 3rd and long, Womack found R.J. Engel on a 31 yard TD pass, the first catch of Engel's career.

When asked how he felt to not only play, but to toss 2 TD Passes Womack replied "Amazing." He did admit that the play prior to the touchdown pass, "I screwed up I threw a streak when RJ was running a post, but we got it right on the very next play."

When Womack finished an 89 yard drive the next time he was in the game by tossing a 25 yard TD to Nate Barham the Redskins were up 14-0 and appeared on their way to a laugher.

But a Womack interception ended a promising drive and the Redskins settled for a 2 td lead at halftime.

At that point Hurricane felt the effects of the opening game of the season, one in which more players than in recent years played on both sides of the ball. The Redskins played most of the 2nd half without 3 of their captains as Dalton Geter, Blake Ross, and Cooper limped along the sidelines dealing with cramping issues.

Winfield took advantage of Cooper's absence and scored on a short Jacob Huff run to cut the Skins lead in half at 14-7. Meanwhile the offense struggled and punted the ball back to the Generals.

However the defense stiffened and the offense responded. Behind a line of Garrett Green, Dustin Russell, Cody Huber, Jared Holstein and Chase Lauerman, Hurricane put together a key drive capped of by a Christian Hill TD run which put the Redskins up 21-7.

While the Hurricane faithful, who turned out in large numbers, exhaled a sigh of relief, Winfield would not go away.

A General TD pass pulled Winfield to within 21-13 and keptthe contest at a one score lead for Hurricane.

After a dazzling Hill 78 Yard TD run was called back on a questionable illegal block, Tim McCutchen nailed a 42 yard FG to ice the win.

NOTES: Womack was named The MVP of the game and received a $500 scholarship from Fusion Heating and Cooling.

Abel Cunningham was solid in his first start at corner. "He did great," said assistant coach Joe Pratt following the game.

Freshman Chase Hager made 3 catches in the 1st half.

J.T. Cooper got his first rushing attempt of his career gaining 3 yards. It was the 140th consecutive game in which a Cooper brother has played for Hurricane, the most by any one family in WV for over 53 years!

Rintaro Takeshima got his first start of his career.

Not only can he nail field goals, boom sky high punts, and blast kick-offs for touch-backs, all of which he did last night, but Tim McCutchen can also tackle. He did so in the 1st quarter on a kick-off return saving a touchdown. Showing he is not perfect he did miss a 49 yard FG attempt.

What's in a number? Cameron Kimble wore both #3 and #56, while J.T. Cooper wear #36 and then switched to #51. Both switches were made in case they had to fill in on the offensive line.

The Redskins continue the season opening road trip as they head to Spring Valley next week. The Timberwolves handled Wayne 49-8 in their season opener.

For now they can enjoy their 9th consecutive win on Winfield and their 23 in the last 24 games played between these rivals.
